Keep ADHD drugs away from teens

To the Editor:
I think we need to take off the sugar coating and look at what is really going on. The result of these suicide screenings in high schools is going to be millions more of our kids on psychotropic drugs such as anti-depressants and psyco-stimulants such as Ritalin. This is despite growing evidence that these drugs are dangerous.
Just recently the Food and Drug Administration put a "black box" warning, the strongest warning before suspension of a drug, on a popular attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder drug called Strattera because it has been found to cause suicidal thoughts.
Our FDA also has black box warnings on all anti-depressants saying they can cause suicidal and violent behavior. Both European and United Kingdom doctors are being told not to prescribe anti-depressants to anyone under 18 for the same reason. What we really need is to get our schools back to being schools instead of mental health clinics.
